There are a variety of reasons you may consider dental bonding for your teeth. Bonding is a special cosmetic dental treatment that bonds composite resin to your tooth to achieve a more appealing smile. Bonding does not require removal of healthy tooth structure. Generally, unless the composite is used to fill a cavity, anesthetic is not necessary for bonding.
Composite resins are widely used in the repair of decayed teeth. After the decay has been removed from the tooth, a composite resin is used to fill in the space. Some resins are simply placed in the cavity while others require a special light to cure the material so that it can harden properly.
Bonding is also used to repair chipped or cracked teeth. When the edge or corner of a tooth has been broken, composite resin can be bonded onto the tooth to restore it to its natural state. Diastemas, or small spaces between teeth, can be eliminated when bonding is used to widen teeth.
Dental bonding can also improve the appearance of discolored teeth. Bonding masks the discoloration and gives the teeth a clean, white appearance.
The Bonding Process
Unless the composite is being used for a cavity, there is not much preparation for the bonding process. A shade guide is employed to determine the correct color of the composite, then the tooth’s surface is roughed somewhat before a conditioning liquid is added. The liquid and rough exterior of the tooth gives the resin a good surface on which to adhere.
The resin is applied to the area and molded into the desired shape. It is then smoothed and a curing light is used to harden it. Once the resin is sufficiently cured, it is further shaped and smoothed before being polished to provide a glossy, slick surface.
